History

In 1790 Rappaport's Law was enacted by President Emily Rappaport that segregated the wizarding communities in America from the No-Maj (Muggles/Nonmagic folks). This law was enacted because of a breach of the International Statute of Secrecy and the sanctions issued against MACUSA by the body.

Violations of the statute were caused by then Secretary of the Treasure, Aristotle Twelvetrees' Daughter, Dorcus. Due to her actions she was almost prisoned for life or sentenced to death. However, due to her father's position within the Congress, she was placed in solitary confinement for one year.

During the time of the law, only witches and wizards that had reached the age of majority would be legally allowed to carry a wand outside of school. This transitioned students from coming to Ilvermorny with a wand, to having to get it at the school. During holidays the student was required to leave their wand at the school and would get it back when classes resumed.

The law was later repealed in 1965.

Wands Today

Today, the tradition still stands that students get their first wand after they are sorted into their house at Ilvermorny. While a student can pick which house they want to belong to, the wand picks the wizard. Students are taken directly from the entrance once they are sorted to the wand room. From there they are able to try out multiple wands to see which wand is best for them.

With the repeal of the the law, students are now allowed to take their wands home during holidays and breaks. However, the Statute still exists and secrecy is strictly enforced.

The wands located in Ilvermorny's Wand Room are crafted from multiple types of woods and cores. They were made by the finest wand makers around the country and world.
